Wetland Plantings in Full Bloom

One of the simple pleasures of being a part of this spectacular property and one that I hope everyone takes advantage of, is the opportunities to observe nature and golf interact. An opportunity to stop and smell the roses or in this particular case the Rose mallow.








Hibiscus Moscheutos Luna White is a perennial plant that was incorporated around our wetland lakes during construction. One of the common names used for this variety of Hibiscus is Rose Mallow or Swamp Mallow. These are hardy plants that can take some cold weather unlike the Hibiscus that is grown in Hawaii, San Diego or the San Francisco Bay Area. They are pretty prolific in our ponds and wetlands right at the moment and in full bloom so take the opportunity to stop and smell the Rose Mallow.

2013 Progress Review

As another year comes to an end and as we start looking forward to the next season it always seems fitting to review the progress and setbacks from the previous year. Weather extremes, tree replacement and removal, irrigation system advances, a maintenance yard burglary and substantial driving range improvements drove the largest changes at Granite Bay in 2013.

Weather
The rain season for 2013 started in October of the previous year. We got off to a pretty good start with over 14" of rain recorded in November and December of 2012 recorded by our own weather station. Then from January 2013 to September 2013 we recorded only 4.99" of rain. In the 2013 calender year we recorded only 6.39" of rain, by far the lowest accumulation for a calender period in the history of Granite Bay Golf Club. The lack of rain and snow effecting upstream storage in Folsom Lake will be potentially be our challenge for the up coming golf season, but how much  remains to be seen. If something doesn't change soon such as a big series of storms producing both rain and snow, lack of irrigation water could be the golf course maintenance topic of 2014. 

Although 2013 was dominated by temperate & dry weather, we did have our share of extremes. For the year we had 15 days of freezing temperatures and frost delays and conversely 12 days of temperatures of over 102 degrees. One extremely rough period was between June 29th and July 5th where we experienced 7 days over 102 degrees with 5 of those days over 105 degrees. This is the period when #3 green struggled again. Temperature extremes are not unusual but the 5 days over 105 degrees and the 6.39" of measured rain for 2013 are historic numbers which could have ramifications yet to be played out.

2013 Capitol Projects
One overdue and needed 2013 project that is scheduled to start this coming week on Monday 12/30/13 is cart parking expansion near Tilleys. The plan is to slightly cut into the bank adjacent to the #9 green along with some widening on the other side of the path, re-grading and replacing the concrete providing for diagonal parking on both sides of the area as opposed to the free for all parallel parking scheme currently in place. Timing for the project is as follows. Week of Monday 12/30/13: Removal of  one of the Blue Oak's close to the patio and wedding ceremony area which has been slated by our arborist as necessary for removal because of it's overall  lack of health and danger to the clubhouse. Week of Monday 1/6/13: Concrete removal, grading, forming and pouring of new concrete. Week of Monday 1/13/14: Re- irrigate and sod. Project complete.

Completed capitol projects in 2013 started by replacing all of the ball washers on the course and in doing so replaced the associated trash enclosures with wooden IPE trash enclosures that match the par three divot boxes and  sand bottle enclosures. These IPE accoutrement's were designed and built by 20 year Granite Bay employee partner Kevin Schuman.

The Granite Bay Teaching Academy was completed in 2013 as well as replacement and extension of the driving range netting protecting the short game area. Netting replacement was completed in conjunction with re-locating the middle target green and bunker on the range providing a better target from the teaching center and to direct general driving range traffic more to the center of the range then to the right.  Any project of this type is not without its controversies but after completion the netting and teaching center building didn't detract as much as predicted and blends well in the surrounding landscape.

Other completed capitol projects for 2013 included pond aeration systems in both ponds on the course and security fencing and alarm system in the GCM yard. Fencing and security were the result of a early in year break-in which we sustained some equipment losses down in the maintenance yard. The pond aeration systems were installed to help with aquatic vegetation accumulation as a result of the eutrophication process that golf course water bodies experience. We did achieve some aquatic vegetation reduction despite the late season installation of the  pond aeration system's and should experience substantially improved season long pond water quality now that we will start off 2014 with the systems in place.

Replacing strategic trees that we have lost throughout the course over the years and proactive replacement of trees that we suspect could be lost in the future was another capitol project we got started on in 2013. Additionally we continued on irrigation coverage enhancements which we had additional capitol funds to draw off of in 2013. A large greens fan to alleviate the unique conditions we experience in the green complex of #3 was purchased in 2013 as a capitol expense as well. This fan will be moved to the area adjacent to #3 green in mid June and remain through August after which it will be removed. All electrical and fan mounts have already been installed.

2014 Plans
Capitol funds for 2014 that we plan to spend on the golf course revolve mostly around continued irrigation improvements. Irrigation components such as sprinkler heads and controllers are 20 years old and a replacement program needs to get started. Some of these replacements will result in upgrades and additional features that will help with irrigation coverage, control and  water conservation which is timely and will be a defining issue of the course in the years to come.

The Club has partial responsibility for landscape and sidewalks along Roseville Parkway & Barton Road so capitol funds have been earmarked for asphalt repair and sealing as well as landscape plant replacement. Along with that we have some tee expansion plans and  long overdue drainage work in the driving range that we plan accomplish with capitol funds in 2014.

I'm sure Ive mentioned more then once, realizing I'm stating the obvious, that golf course's are in a constant state of change that begins when the first seed touches the ground. We go from season to season and year to year making plan's, adjusting to the whims of nature, trying to stay ahead of the next issue. The task of shepherding these changes, as much as one can, is much more rewarding when one has support of those whom benefit the most from these efforts. Therefore I know I speak for the entire golf course maintenance department when I say, It continues to be our pleasure to serve the Membership here at Granite Bay. Autumn 2013 is Here

Ever since June 21st 2013, the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, we have been looking forward to Fall Equinox on September 22nd. This 104 day period between the Solstice and the Equinox has always been and will always be the most difficult time of the year for the turf at Granite Bay. I would not consider this summer either an extremely hot summer overall, or a classic mild summer. However it was on the different side. Some weather data examples taken from the weather station here at the course back up my thoughts. Prior to the solstice on June 21st we had a two day mini heatwave where daytime highs hit 103 and 106 that were immediately followed by a high of 84. That's different. We did get hit with a classic heatwave between June 29th and July 5th, seven days of triple digit temperatures with a 107 on 7/5/13 followed by a high of 90 degrees on 7/6/13. A 17 degree swing in one day following a week of intense heat seems different then a typical summer pattern. Lows during this period of time were in the mid 70's and we did record 5 straight days of temperatures over 105. Overall we  recorded 15 days over 100 degrees, 47 days in the 90's and 27 days in the 80's with an average high temperate of 92 and an average low of 62. Maybe not so different, it just seemed that way to me.

Our #3 green and to a lesser extent the left hand edge of #14 which were damaged during the seven day heatwave in early July. I mentioned the steps we planned an taking to alleviate the chronic problems we seem to experience with #3 in  a previous course update and we have made some pretty good progress on these steps since then. Firstly we have grass on the green which is nice, albeit the green is slower then the rest. We have be reducing the height of cut on the mower that we use to mow the green  over the past couple of weeks and it is almost where the rest of the greens are. (0.140" compared to 0.110") We removed the two trees to the east of the green that were blocking the the morning sun which seemed to make a big difference immediately with recovery and air movement. Additionally we secured capitol funding for a greens fan which is due to be delivered next week. Electrical service for the fan along with the base that the removable fan slides in and out of is in process. The usefulness during severe summer weather has past in 2013 however everything will be in place for next summer although we most likely try it out this winter to prevent frost on this green which is the last one to thaw out.

Pond Aeration

Another 2013 project that I have mentioned a few times was the installation  of a aeration system that would supply diffused air to our ponds on #1 & 9 as well as in front of #3. Adding diffused air to these ponds will go a long way to reversing the aging or eutrophication process. Our ponds are 20 years old with a very naturalized design that are predisposed to an accumulation of organic matter settling in these ponds because of the plant material surrounding them. The breakdown of this organic matter rapidly increases the nutrient load in the pond, creating an an environment for floating aquatic weeds such as algae and mosquito fern. The growth of these plants effect water aesthetics and  water quality by removing oxygen crating a cycle of decline.

The aeration system has been operational in the pond in front of #3 for a couple of weeks and there is already a noticeable improvement in water quality and algae reduction. The diffusers and aeration system in the #1 & #9 pond are installed but just awaiting electrical service hook-up. Installation of these systems systems, like the fan on #3,  will be helpful in 2013 but should really be effective when we turn them on first thing in the spring of 2014 and just let them run as designed.

Fall 2014 Course Aeration Schedule

With fall comes playing surface aeration, which the necessity and benefits  have been covered extensively in these Granite Bay Course Updates. If you happen to be reading these updates for the first time and want to catch up, you can click on the Aeration Labels to the left of this update to check out process details and  a good explanation of why we get soft in the summer which is very much related to our Granite Bay aeration philosophy. As we been doing the past few years we have a schedule of alternating front nine and back nine closures to accomplish aeration of the areas of the course that are very difficult to perform properly in the midst of member play. Below is the schedule for fall of 2013.

Tis The Season To Do Projects

Although we'll have some wet weather to maneuver, the late fall and through the winter is the best time to get projects done on the golf course. This is primarily due to turfgrass needs being minimal once the days have gotten shorter and cooler and we don't have to irrigate or mow as frequently.

We have a list of projects longer then our ability to complete with some of the usual suspects and some new for Granite Bay. New for Granite Bay and immediately following Thanksgiving we are going to start a curbing project along small sections of cart paths, primarily near tees and greens. Golf carts, as we all know, are a big part of modern golf and can be detrimental to the turfgrass playing surfaces making traffic control a necessity to protect the turf. Currently we employ an assortment traffic control measures including stakes & chains and those hideous 4 X 4 - 18" high plastic blocks on a spike along green and tee cart path edges to protect the turf from a cart drivers natural inclination to pull over when parking.

These stakes & chains and blocks on a spike are marginally more attractive then the wore out turf they are in place to protect, hence the need for curbs. Admittedly this project is more about aesthetics then it is about playability although protecting turf along paths near greens is definitely a playability concern, not to mention eliminating the obstruction of the current traffic control measures. I will provide details on the process which gets started in earnest on Monday, November 26. We have four weeks to complete the project so it will be an all hands on deck effort. Other projects that we have slated for the late fall of 2012 & winter of 2013  is the always well received pruning and clearing along with more irrigation coverage work. Additionally we have some diffused oxygen diffusers or bubbler's are slated for installation in both the irrigation pond between #1 & #9 and the pond in front of #3. These oxygen diffusers will add oxygen to the ponds and substantially help with the ponds biology and water clarity particularly in the summer months.

Summer Update

It has been far too long since we have done a course update and  have allot of things to cover. We have been contributing daily golf course maintenance information to the very well received daily e-mail communication that is generated from the proshop. However that communication piece is void of many of the details that many members have told me they appreciate. So I'll make a attempt at brevity and cover some things that have been happening since spring.

Weather
Weather is by far the story of 2011. An extremely wet winter led into one of the wettest Springs I can recall in our area. Many members asked did all of this rain and cool weather help or hurt the course? Granite Bay always thrives in cooler weather and conversely struggles in hot weather. The rainfall amounts filling reservoirs at least puts the drought talk at bay for this year so for this course, the weather helped. Financially other areas of the Club struggle when it rains and our daily fee sister courses have a hard time recovering from this kind of a spring but anytime we at Granite Bay  don't have to turn the sprinklers on we are thankful. We even received a cool weather system in late June that produced a half a inch of rain which was extremely helpful.

We have received a couple of mini heat waves so far, one in June and another in July. Both of these heatwaves were proceeded by a substantial cool down and thus far we have kept turfgrass losses to a minimum. All of the irrigation work we have been doing has helped substantially along with increased efforts in automatic system adjustments and hand watering with hoses. So far so good, but there is still a ways to go.

Aeration
All of the playing surfaces at Granite Bay have one thing in common and that is a thatch layer that has become excessive over the years. As a recap thatch is the spongy layer of accumulated organic matter directly below the surface of the turf. Some is necessary, excessive amounts can be detrimental to playing conditions and turf health. Core aeration is one way to keep up with thatch production and aggressive core aeration can help move the situation to desirable levels.

Naturally there are down sides to the actual process of core aeration which include temporary surface disruption which can actually be hindered by how we do the job. Let me explain.  First the overriding principle of the cleanup process during core aeration is that the extracted cores must be allowed to dry before we can effectively remove them from the turf surface. This is not an issue with putting surfaces because Granite Bay has traditionally closed alternating nines to accommodate putting surface aeration and removal of cores from the putting surfaces requires a different process altogether. Our issue lies in the aeration of the fairways and green surrounds. We have traditionally not alternated closing of front nine and back nine when we have aerated these areas. This has necessitated our rushing to remove the cores while they were still to wet to properly process in an attempt to stay ahead of players. This has resulted in both a substandard job and the inability to complete the process in a timely manner. Rushing to complete  a given area causes us to smash wet cores into the turf surface further complicating recovery and  turf aesthetics. Additionally it takes over 60 days to core aerate the entire golf course providing we have good weather so when done twice a year in the spring and fall we can approach up to  half of the year to complete the two entire process.

After discussing this situation with Mitch and Brad along with some members of the golf committee, the golf course maintenance department garnered support for some more alternating front and back nine closures to accommodate these processes. The results will be our ability to finish the entire process at least for greens, green surrounds & fairways much more rapidly and even more importantly in my mind produce results that will look better and recover quicker.

 Because we need dry weather, these alternating closures will have to be somewhat fluid. We will target Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays and of course take advantage of Mondays where there are no golf course events sold. Obviously we will be working near putting surface aeration dates which club events typically steer clear of anyway so hopefully this will work out well for all of us. We will communicate specifics via morning updates, newsletters and this course update. Hopefully everyone can see the advantage of a few more alternating closures so we can get this necessary chore done in a timely and proper fashion.

The aggressive core aeration that we started last October to our putting surfaces has already begun to yield results. Root depth on our greens has increased and the anaerobic black layer conditions have improved as well. In review we started a much more aggressive core aeration regimen to our putting surfaces last fall then had been utilized in the past reacting to substandard conditions last summer. These conditions were the result of excessive organic matter accumulation. The aggressive process doubled the amount of surface area affected during core aeration, increasing from 5% per aeration event to 10% per aeration event. The perceived downside was that recovery would be prolonged due to removing larger cores and removing more of them because of using a tighter pattern. I think we all noticed that that was not the case last October and this past April. We actually recovered as rapidly or maybe even at a slightly accelerated pace. Was this due to ideal weather both times or our creating a healthier root zone environment, logic would dictate a little of both.

Consistent putting quality week in and week out is still a work in progress with these greens.  The level of health has improved due to the changing of aeration strategies and has allowed us to get more aggressive with surface management techniques such as vertical mowing, topdressing and growth regulator applications. Additionally our rolling regimen has stepped up where we are rolling greens up to six times per week. That being said our varying degrees of poa / bent mix throughout the course's greens  still present some challenges for both putting quality and putting surface management.  Additional challenges, as you know, are produced by trees which restrict air movement and obstruct light particularily on #7, #13, #14 & #16. Pruning to these areas this past winter has helped but we still need to be diligent in keeping these trees pruned and some potential removals moving forward. The good news is that  the healthier the rootzone becomes, the more we can engage in technique's that can mitigate the adverse effects to putting that poa anuua can produce. Will we ever be able to completely eliminate it ? Probably not but we can reduce some of the negative effects it contributes to inconsistent putting quality.

Cart Traffic Control
We sure opened a can of worms last week when we attempted a trial run on restricting cart's to paths only in the afternoons when temperatures exceeded 100 degrees. Communicating  the roll out of this trial was admittedly less then ideal although naturally the intent was to protect course conditions. The action solicited much feedback from the membership some positive, much negative and all valid. I suppose one of the positive things that came out of the trial was the multitude of opinions that can aid in framing a solid policy moving forward. Let me state this up front that we currently do not have a formal policy for restricting cart traffic to paths during hot weather. Additionally this is not something that we concocted. Other local golf clubs have used similar restrictions and I am sure were met with the same reaction along with support that we are currently experiencing. Lets look at some facts.
  1. Cart traffic is hard on turf especially in the summer months.
  2. We typically do not have that many days over 100 degrees.
  3. Most damage occurs in late afternoon when the vast majority of traffic on the course is done during extremely hot days.
  4. Modest restrictions particularly during the summer months should result in improved turf conditions.
  5. We will not please everyone with additional cart restrictions.
 First and foremost the  golf course maintenance department's purpose is to not only provide great conditions but to protect these conditions for our members. That being said we value each and every group of members concerns here at the club and sincerely attempt to accommodate all wishes. If possible it would be nice to come up with a policy that both protected the course and maintained our members benefits in using their course.

Perhaps like the Adopt a Green program, which has significantly reduced ball mark pressure on the putting surfaces we could start another member awareness  program called Cart Conduct. Using morning updates, course updates and newsletters we could constantly inform members of voluntarily using the cart paths whenever feasible, players paring up in carts, following a strict 90 degree back to the path not the rough line and above all educating members with pictures of stressed out afternoon turf and the damage carts do to it and their responsibility to avoid these areas. 

We will keep the above mentioned Cart Conduct concepts in front of the membership and hope it will have the same results as Adopt a Green. If not, we could adopt a  policy that would restrict carts to the paths after 3:00 PM on days that the forecasted temperature is to climb to 100 degrees and above. Handicap flags would still be available. I don't think the policy would need to be any more complicated then that. We would communicate  upcoming restrictions via the morning e-mail blast in addition to this course update and the printed newsletter.

My Original intention in getting these Course Updates out was to do them every two to three week's not months. The information we provide to the morning e-mail blasts doesn't really convey the details of what we have been doing and why. I didn't include all of the info I wanted to in this update because I didn't want to overload. Our next update, which we be in the next few weeks,  will cover  the long awaited completion of our bunker project and the renovation of the practice chipping area. Hopefully we'll be reporting about good golf course conditions as well. Thanks as always for your support.

Pond Work Completed

I stretched out a long series in our course reports last year describing the history, function and issues we have with the two ponds on our property. This explanation culminated in the first ever aquatic vegetation removal from primarily around our pump station intake area in George’s lake or the lake adjacent to holes #1 & #9.

As with any new procedure there were learning curves to work out. The first on was that the contractor showed up with this massive piece of equipment called an “Aqua Mog” which was on a large trailer moved by a large diesel truck. Communication prior to the equipment’s arrival could have been better as we had to lay down protection along the cart path on #9 to maneuver the piece of equipment into the pond.

The “Aqua Mog” was like a large floating excavator that removed rotting vegetation at the ponds bottom around the pump station intake along with some shoreline vegetation that had crept into some shelves along the 9th fairway side of the pond. We had budgeted only two days of work with the “Mog” and probably could have used its services for another day but budgets are what they are.
The combination of the selective spraying and the “Mog” work has created a different environment in George’s Lake this year. The Azolla or floating red vegetation is not present but its absence as I suspected creates an environment for filamentous algae. So far we have been able to keep the algae in check but we still have some summer left.

Bottom line is our ponds are just one other part of the course that need to be maintained and prior to the work that we did this year nothing has been done. We made progress this year but need to keep up on aquatic vegetation much like we need to keep up on thatch removal in the turf.

Recent Pond Work

Did not want to leave you hanging on the pond work that was recently done in our main Irrigation pond. Many of you have asked me about it and I promise full details in the next update. Bottom line is everything went well and our ability to draw water out of the pond is better for it.

Main thing I learned from the process is we need to continue to be diligent and proactive in pond maintenance like anything else or we end up having to do more work in the end. Sometimes easier said then done I suppose.

The Aging of Our Ponds

Part Four – The Solutions for Our Ponds

The following is the conclusion of the four part series I started last fall addressing the two water features at Granite Bay Golf Club.

Part I, II & III covered the function, history and aging of our ponds and now Part IV will cover some solutions.

In a nutshell the importance of our ponds as a source for the life blood or irrigation water of the course cannot be over emphasized. The Naturalized style and beauty of our water features are also crucial to our Audubon status, design integrity of the course and our use permit with Placer County. A healthy, happy median must be maintained on a go forward basis. We must apply the same proactive maintenance procedures to our ponds as we do to our turf. If we don’t the natural aging will interfere with our ability to irrigate the course and continue to give us sub standard water feature aesthetics in the summer.

Tentatively scheduled beginning June 7th we have a contractor arriving to thin out some of the encroaching vegetation along with the sub-surface decaying stems of water primrose that are surrounding the pump station intake area. Along with this work we plan to replace the pump station intake screens which have rusted away.

Additionally we will continue to control aggressive aquatic vegetation as it starts to encroach into the ponds, creating an unsightly appearance and adding additional biomass to the already overloaded situation. This strategy of mechanical removal and chemical and biological control is the beginning of a maintenance program that will be essential if we are to maintain the function and the natural design features of our ponds.

Part Three – The Aging process

I apologize for leaving many of you hanging regarding this four part series, “The Aging of our Ponds” which I started back in October of 2009. In the process of soliciting information from aquatic biologist’s for solutions and strategies for our ponds, I got distracted with the busyness of all that we have been doing and neglected to follow-up. And I know many of our members are curious about the ponds and are following this series because of the comments I have received. Again I apologize for the information delay. Here’s a re-cap of what we have covered so far.

In Part I of this series we covered “The Function of Our Ponds”, that they hold more then just strategic value to hole #’s 1, 9, & 3 but are crucial for irrigation water storage. Without irrigation water there is no Granite Bay Golf Club. In Part II we covered “The History of our Ponds” which discussed in part the regulatory concessions that were imposed during their construction. This included the replanting and establishment of the natural vegetation immediately following the pond’s construction. This natural vegetation lends to the beauty of the course, but contributes to the natural aging process that potentially impedes water storage and flow to our pump station.

In Part III it is time to cover this actual aging process, or what is referred to as “Eutrophication”. The following definition excerpts are from Wikipedia. “Eutrophication is frequently a result of nutrient pollution such as the release of sewage effluent, urban stormwater run-off, and run-off carrying excess fertilizers into natural waters. However, It may also occur naturally in situations where nutrients accumulate (e.g. depositional environments) or where they flow into systems on a ephemeral (short-lived) basis. Eutrophication generally promotes excessive plant growth and decay, favors certain weedy species over others, and may cause a severe reduction in water quality.”

Golf course turf is an incredible user and filter of nutrients, limiting or eliminating their contamination of streams, lakes and ponds. Therefore most of the aging or Eutrophication of our ponds can be attributed as a “Naturally occurring… depositional environment.” This means that when all of that vegetation surrounding our natural ponds goes dormant in the winter, the biomass remains in the ponds which both add and deplete nutrients as this biomass decays. Additionally the north end of George’s Lake (#1 & #9) is fed by Linda Creek, which can feed the pond with sediment and potential nutrient run-off from upstream.

All of these mostly naturally occurring inputs along with virtually no maintenance to these ponds over the years have produced an environment, which certain aquatic weed species have flourished from year to year as well as an substantial expansion of the shoreline vegetation.

The last two years since my arrival at Granite Bay, George’s lake has been covered with a weed called Mosquito Fern (azolla spp.) and Duckweed (lemna spp.). These are both free floating aquatic weeds that are unsightly but actually help with water quality by shielding the sun which heats up the water establishing other more noxious weed species such as Filamentous Algae (cladophora spp.). In the years prior to my arrival George’s lake was starting to have a real problem with Creeping Water Primrose (jussiaea repens). Pests such as the above mentioned algae and water primrose are not only unsightly and invasive but cause some real problems with irrigation water flow to the pump station. This is because their underwater structure fills the water column obstructing flow as well as clogging intake screens and filters.

Bottom line our pond’s need to be managed better. We need to do more strategic herbicide applications to prevent and keep in check both unsightly weeds such as Mosquito Fern and noxious weeds such as Water Primrose and Filamentous Algae. Along with strategic herbicide applications we need to reduce the encroaching vegetation and remove or harvest the excessive biomass. The History of Our Ponds - Part II

In part one of the aging of our ponds, I discussed the crucial part our ponds play in water storage and irrigation delivery for the golf course turf. Additionally addressed was the fact that the aging process that our ponds, and for that matter most ponds experience is beginning limit both our irrigation holding capacity and our ability to remove the water for irrigation.
The history of our ponds might shed some light on our particular aging process and how it might have been accelerated. This information will not change anything just provide information so everyone understands our upcoming solutions.
The history of our ponds are intricately linked to the construction history of the course and this entire history is well documented. The following are excerpts are from “The History of Granite Bay Golf Club” which is on the Granite Bay website.
“The two bodies of water on the course play an integral role in the irrigation system, and both have interesting stories to tell. George's Lake between holes one and nine, is named after George Dunmore, the owner of the land and one of the original partners. Louie's Lake, which fronts hole number three, is named after Louie Costanzo, a close friend and business partner of Dunmore.”

“The present George's Lake is more than three times larger than the original stock pond placed there, along with fish, in the 1950's. In order to install the plumbing and pumps for the irrigation system, the lake had to be dammed. The California Fish and Game Department scooped up all the fish and moved them down stream to Louie's Lake, and the construction started. When the natural growth along the shoreline of the lake was dug up, the rootstock was saved and was then re-spread along the shoreline of the new larger lake. About eight months later, the new George's Lake, replete with fish, looked like it had been there since the beginning of time.”
“The story about Louie's Lake is a little on the bizarre side. Louie Costanzo, and Dunmore, were not only long time chums and partners in the Wexford project, but he shared George's passion for building a golf course. He had a habit of driving around the barren property and discussing ideas for the golf course with Dunmore. This, of course, was long before the involvement of Cook and Parsinen. One day Louie hauled a bulldozer out to the property and began clearing trees on what is now the 18th hole. Back then, it was to be the first hole and it was to play uphill. He then decided to create a lake at the location of the present third hole green, and began digging out earth, trees and brush. That lake now bears his name and might have been even bigger had the county not stepped in with a "cease and desist" order to stop clearing trees.”

The California Department of Fish and Game was not the only regulatory entities that Mr. Parsinan & Mr. Cook had to deal with during construction as you can imagine. The developers were required to compensate for impacts from development on a little over two acres of wetlands. This was a complicated mitigation process that resulted in the mandated formal design and monitoring of the planting of over 2000 riparian woodland and scrub species around George’s and Louie’s lakes. In addition to the various woodland species that were required to be planted around the ponds perennial marsh plants that were native to property were transplanted and moved to different parts of the pond edges to accelerate the re-establishment of the wet land habitat.
Fourteen years later we have well-established vegetation around both George’s and Louie’s Lakes. This vegetation fits the design style and vision of “Golf As It Should Be”. The vegetation consisting of trees, wetland shrubs, tulles and rushes continue to grow & spread and deposit foliage and material into most crucially George’s lake every year. This combined with the sediment that comes into George’s Lake from Linda Creek is creating a situation where the lake is losing its depth and breadth. Part III of the series of the Aging of our Ponds will cover more of this eutrophication or aging process.

The Aging of Our Ponds

Part One – Function

There is a lot more to the two ponds here at Granite Bay then just the strategic value they add to holes 1, 3 & 9. They have a unique history and crucial function to the life of Granite Bay Golf Club. They also like any natural ecosystem have an evolving nature to them that is now beginning to conflict with their crucial function and that is to hold water to irrigate the turf of our course. Solutions to this conflict will not be easy but necessary for us maintain an unobstructed irrigation source.
I wanted to address the issue in a few parts over the next few updates then perhaps put them all together as a blueprint for the future.

From “George’s Lake” the water now flows into another large culvert that feeds a large sump, which is where our pumps draw the water for the irrigation system.
The overriding issue is, and I will elaborate in future editions, is that “George’s lake” is going through what is called an eutrophication process. The effects of this process are that sediment build up and aquatic plant life accumulation are dangerously close to effecting the flow of water out of George’s lake to the pump station.
If we had access to all the water in the Folsom Lake and we couldn’t draw it out of George’s lake we would not be able to irrigate the course. This is why this is an important issue that needs to be addressed.
Next part of this series is “The History of Our Ponds” which will cover some golf course construction history and how the lake design features might actually contribute to the eutrophication process.
